Water garden sigiriya

After enjoying a leisurely breakfast today, you will be accompanied by your chauffeur guide as you travel to Sigiriya. The distance between Colombo and Sigiriya is around 150 kilometers, and traveling there will take approximately three hours and thirty minutes.

In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to go on an excursion with your guide to the Sigiriya Ancient City Complex, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Centuries ago, in the fifth century CE, King Kashyapa, a visionary king, embarked on an amazing endeavor that would leave an everlasting impression on history. This endeavor became known as the Sigiriya City Complex, a location so extraordinary that it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is commonly referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.

Sigiriya exhibits the lasting fascination of an old city complex that has been carefully conserved throughout time. As you enter its domain, you will be taken into a world of wonder and amazement.

One of Sigiriya’s most notable characteristics is its beautifully created gardens, four in all, each inspired by natural world themes. These rich, vivid gardens are a beautiful testimony to the people who created this metropolitan complex’s creative talent.

But Sigiriya offers more than just natural beauty; it also provides an interesting glance into everyday life in Sri Lanka in the fifth century CE. As you tour the site, you’ll come across a variety of paintings and graffiti that tell the narrative of a bygone age, vividly showing the habits and practices of the time.

What distinguishes Sigiriya is its historic architecture, which places a strong focus on a variety of disciplines. Geometry, mathematics, ceramics, and the complex control of water are just a few of the skills used to create this architectural masterpiece. As you explore the complex, you’ll be amazed by the creativity and craftsmanship of the people who once inhabited Sigiriya.

Sigiriya is a living example of the fusion of art and science, where history, culture, and natural marvels combine. It’s a journey back in time that will instill in you a profound appreciation for the genius and creativity of the people who constructed this remarkable city complex.

Day - 03
Sigiriya

After breakfast this morning, you will be accompanied by your chauffeur guide as you travel to the Polonnaruwa Medieval City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When we contrast Polonnaruwa with Anuradhapura, we find that the history of Anuradhapura covers a period of 1400 years, while the Polonnaruwa kingdom barely survived for 200 years. However, Polonnaruwa is home to a large number of monuments that are significant to both the Hindu and Tamil cultures as well as the Sinhala Buddhist culture.

Polonnaruwa Medieval City (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Polonnaruwa stands out in the pages of history as a city with a fascinating tale that spans many decades. The idea for this fortress dates back to the thoughts of a Sinhalese king who hoped to create a powerful military outpost in this area.

However, the Chola dynasty’s successful conquest of the area in the 10th century resulted in the city being given the name “Jananathamangalam.” Their victory was a milestone point in the city’s development, changing its course in ways none could have predicted.

Vijayabahu, whose name will live on in Polonnaruwa’s history, led a daring attack against the city by bringing together three separate armies from different parts of the country. In 1070, he was proclaimed king of Polonnaruwa after a decisive battle, ushering in a new era for the city. A reflection of its rich cultural heritage, the island country of Sri Lanka was once known as Thambapanni.

The Buddhist and Hindu temples and palaces that are the hallmarks of modern-day Polonnaruwa had their origins between the 10th and 13th centuries CE. The city was a thriving hub of religious and cultural activity at this time, with every building standing as a monument to the craftsmanship of its time.

Change was blowing through Polonnaruwa as the ages passed, however. At the end of the 13th century, the city’s inhabitants began a mass migration, leaving behind their homes in this once-thriving metropolis and heading south and west. Though long gone, the city’s golden heyday is preserved in the city’s timeless legacy, which still amazes and captivates visitors who stroll its historic streets.

Accommodation: Water Garden Sigiriya

Day - 04
Kandy

Today, after a leisurely breakfast, you will leave Sigiriya to go to Kandy, the final kingdom of Sri Lanka, which is roughly three and a half hours’ journey away and is located 110 kilometers from Sigiriya. On the road to Kandy, your chauffeur guide will take you to the Dambulla Cave Temple and the Dambulla Economic Center.

Dambulla Dedicated Economic Center

The heartbeat of the local community can be felt at the Dambulla Economic Centre, providing a rare and genuine glimpse into the lives of the people who live there. It’s not a historical site, but rather a location where visitors may experience local culture as if they were really living among the locals.

As you enter this hive of activity, you’ll get a glimpse of the daily lives of the locals and the vibrant enterprises that have taken root here. Although the Dambulla Economic Centre (abbreviated as DEC) is not very historic, it is extremely important to the modern economy of the area.

In actuality, this “dedicated economic centre” is really a huge wholesale market where people come to buy and sell fresh produce. There’s a buzz of excitement in the air as trucks carrying fruit and vegetables pull up, and their cargo is quickly unloaded. Men walk through the bustling market with their brows wrinkled by the weight of their loads on their shoulders.

Witnessing the vibrant displays of fresh produce, the heated bidding battles, and the continual hum of a bustling wholesale agricultural market is sure to leave visitors with a lasting impression. These commercial hubs are crucial nodes in Sri Lanka’s sophisticated distribution network, linking the country’s many marketplaces. Dambulla is essentially the “national distribution centre” for vegetables since it receives a constant flow of produce from different regions. Here, expert cross-docking and redistribution of bulk cargo guarantee a steady supply of commodities across the nation and keep the economy humming.

Dambulla Cave Temple (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage, the Golden Temple of Dambulla, also renowned as the Dambulla Cave Temple, holds an esteemed place on the prestigious list of World Heritage Sites. Its addition to this coveted list in 1991 marked a momentous recognition of its exceptional cultural and historical importance.

As you venture into the heart of this hallowed sanctuary, you’ll find yourself surrounded by an awe-inspiring array of sculptures and statues that bear testament to the profound spiritual legacy of Sri Lanka. The caverns hold within their ancient walls the stone-carved likenesses of three Sri Lankan rulers, their stoic presence a testament to the land’s regal history. But that’s not all. As you explore further, your gaze will be drawn to the divine forms of four gods and goddesses, each a symbol of the rich tapestry of beliefs woven into the island’s history.

However, the most poignant and numerous are the 153 statues of Buddha, each with its own unique expression and posture. These sculptures radiate a serene aura, enveloping the visitor in a palpable sense of tranquility and reverence.

The cavern’s walls themselves are adorned with breathtaking murals, stretching across a staggering 23,000 square feet (2,100 square meters) of space. These paintings tell tales of profound spiritual significance, depicting key moments in Buddha’s life, including his first sermon and his unwavering battle against the seductive temptations wrought by the demon Mara.

Dambulla’s cave complex is not just a singular time capsule; it’s a layered history lesson. Comprising five distinct caves that harken back to different epochs, each cave seems to whisper stories of the past, echoing with the voices of those who’ve sought solace and enlightenment within their cool, dark depths.

As you stand within these ancient chambers, gazing upon the masterpieces that adorn the cave’s interior, you’ll feel a deep connection to the spiritual and artistic legacy of Sri Lanka, understanding why the Golden Temple of Dambulla has earned its esteemed place among the world’s cultural treasures.

Day - 07
Kandy > Ella

Your train journey begins today; in the morning, your chauffeur guide will meet you at the hotel and then drive you to Kandy railway station. The train ride from Kandy to Ella is expected to last approximately seven hours.

Kandy to Ella train journey

In the middle of colonial-era Sri Lanka, a unique voyage began to take shape. It all started with a railway, which goes to show how long the island’s history has been preserved. This engineering masterpiece of a locomotive was more than just a means of transportation; it was a lifeline, linking the fertile tea fields to the thriving metropolis of Colombo, where the world’s need for Ceylon tea was satisfied. The train came to represent the golden age of plantations and British influence in Sri Lanka, when the country was still called Ceylon.

The railway now largely serves the local populace as they travel between their homes and places of employment. This route’s continued popularity means that it’s sometimes difficult for tourists to get a seat on this much-loved ride.

One of the most beautiful train rides in Sri Lanka, if not the world, is from Kandy to Ella. As the train pulls away, you’ll begin a journey through scenery that’s beyond words. The landscapes unfurl like a living picture, with long expanses of verdant tea farms, towering mountains that reach for the clouds, beautiful viaducts that bridge deep valleys, and thick forests that conceal mysteries.

The view is beautiful, but that’s not all that this trip has to offer. It’s a great chance to experience authentic Sri Lankan culture. At each station, sellers will board the train to entice you with spicy foods that are the essence of local flavor; along the route, residents will smile and greet you warmly; youngsters playing by the tracks will eagerly wave to passing trains.

Taking the early train from Kandy to Ella is suggested if you want to make the most of your adventure. All of your travels will be conducted in daylight, giving you plenty of time to take in the breathtaking scenery. As you dangle out the open train doors, you’ll be fascinated by the constantly shifting landscape. After all, you wouldn’t want to miss a second of this unforgettable adventure as it unfolds in the gentle Sri Lankan breeze. This journey promises to be more than simply a train trip; it is a journey into the heart and spirit of a country, and a must-do for anybody visiting Sri Lanka.

Day - 08
Ella

Today is your free day at Nine Skies, although Ella is a lovely spot to visit. Ella is well-known for its excursions to the Demodara Railway Loop, the Nine Arch Bridge, and the Tea Factory. You may discuss your plans with your chauffeur guide, and he will plan your visit accordingly.

The Demodara loop

The Demodara Loop is a hidden gem in the heart of Sri Lanka that every tourist should make a point of seeing. This incredible engineering feat, also known as the “circular loop,” “spiral loop,” and “spiral ride,” is a remarkable sight.

At the center of the Demodara Loop is the Demodara tunnel and railway entrance, where the train line cleverly loops back on itself and emerges from a tunnel just under the Demodara train station. This railway is extraordinary and unlike any other, as it’s the only one in the world with a tunnel under a railway station.

The engineer who accomplished this remarkable task reportedly got the idea after observing a tea plantation operator adjust his turban. This flash of inspiration led to the creation of a railway spectacle that has since captivated visitors from all around the world.

During colonial times, the Demodara Loop was constructed to transport tea from the beautiful estates of the Uva district to the commercial hub of Colombo in Sri Lanka. However, engineers and surveyors faced a unique challenge at Demodara due to the region’s challenging topography. They had to deal with steep inclines while being restricted by the Ceylon Government Railway’s rule, which allowed for no more than a one-foot rise for every 44-foot drop (1/44).

The Demodara Loop, as it stands today, symbolizes Sri Lanka’s commitment to preserving its heritage and showcasing it to the world. When you stand on the Demodara railway station platform, you become part of a story that weaves together the challenges posed by nature and the solutions provided by human ingenuity, leaving you in awe of the wonders that await you in Ella.

Nine Arch Bridge

Hidden within the lush landscapes of Sri Lanka, nestled between the Ella and Demodara railway stations, stands a remarkable feat of engineering and architectural elegance known as the Nine Arch Bridge. This viaduct bridge serves as a testament to the island’s colonial past, a time when grand railway projects were meticulously crafted with precision and ambition.

The visionary behind the creation of the ‘Upcountry Railway Line of Ceylon’ was D. J. Wimalasurendra, a celebrated Ceylonese engineer and inventor. Wimalasurendra not only conceived of this remarkable railway but also undertook the challenging responsibility of overseeing its design and execution. His unwavering dedication to the project served as a driving force behind its ultimate success.

The architectural marvel of the Nine Arch Bridge was brought to life by Harold Cuthbert Marwood, an architect from the Railway Construction Department of the Ceylon Government Railway and Transport Board. His meticulous designs breathed life into the structure, ensuring that both form and function coexisted seamlessly.

However, the bridge’s construction was a collaborative effort, with P. K. Appuhami, a skilled builder from Ceylon, working hand in hand with British experts to bring this vision to fruition. While various names are associated with the bridge’s construction, Appuhami is often credited as the driving force behind this stunning architectural masterpiece.

Today, the Nine Arch Bridge stands not only as a tribute to the skill and determination of its creators but also as a reminder of Sri Lanka’s colonial history and its commitment to connecting the island’s regions. As you stand beneath its nine majestic arches, you become a part of the story of a nation’s ambition and the enduring beauty of its engineering achievements.

Day - 09
Yala

Today, you will visit Yala National Park, located in the country’s dry zone. The hotel will organize all Yala game drives at no extra charge.

Yala National Park – Game Drives

The story of Yala National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s natural treasures, unfolds with the grace of time, echoing through the ages. It was in the year 1900 that the sanctuary was first established, a haven for the island’s thriving wildlife. But it was destined for more. In 1938, it was elevated to the esteemed status of a national park, becoming Sri Lanka’s second-largest and, alongside Wilpattu National Park, the country’s very first.

In the days of yore, as the colonial era dawned around the turn of the century, the Yala region was, perhaps curiously, a hunting ground reserved for local sportsmen. The name Yala was not yet associated with this expanse of untamed beauty. It was a time when nature’s riches were sought for sport rather than protection.

Today, Yala stands as a testament to the enduring commitment to preserve Sri Lanka’s precious ecosystems. It’s comprised of five distinct blocks, each a sanctuary in its own right. Of these, three are open to visitors, inviting them to immerse themselves in a realm of natural wonder.

Yala is a jewel in the crown of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity, holding the prestigious title of an Important Bird Area (IBA). Within its embrace, 215 bird species take flight, each adding a note to the symphony of avian life. Among them, seven are unique to Sri Lanka, a testament to the island’s natural diversity.

But the feathered residents of Yala are not its sole attraction. The park is also home to 44 different animal species, from graceful deer to formidable elephants. Yet, it’s the leopard that reigns supreme in Yala. The park boasts one of the highest leopard populations in the world, offering visitors the rare chance to encounter these elusive big cats in their natural habitat.

As you wander through Yala’s diverse landscapes, you become part of a story that spans centuries, a story of conservation, transformation, and the enduring beauty of the natural world. Yala National Park, with its storied past and thriving ecosystems, is an invitation to explore and protect the natural wonders of Sri Lanka.

Accommodation: Wild Coast Tented Lodge

Nestled on the stunning border where the lush jungle embraces the pristine shoreline of a secluded beach, the Wild Coast Tented Camp emerges as a gem of architectural brilliance. This luxury tented camp, a recipient of the prestigious UNESCO design award, is a place where dreams merge with reality, overlooking the boundless expanse of the Indian Ocean.

The camp’s unique design is a symphony of harmonious integration, a seamless blend with the surrounding landscape. The soaring, curved, organic structures of Wild Coast stand as a testament to architectural ingenuity, their very presence an awe-inspiring triumph of human creativity.

As you step onto the camp’s grounds, you’ll be captivated by the bamboo-clad, open-air restaurant and bar, a space that invites you to dine and unwind in nature’s embrace. This overlooks a freeform turquoise infinity pool, a jewel set against the backdrop of the Yala bushland and the tranquil beach beyond. The scene is nothing short of breathtaking, a perfect embodiment of tropical paradise.

Yet, the Wild Coast Tented Camp holds more wonders within its wilderness confines. Cocoon tented bedrooms, each more dazzling than the last, are scattered like ethereal seed pods across the landscape. These sanctuaries of luxury offer a tranquil space to rest and rejuvenate, their design and decor a harmonious extension of the natural world.

And for those seeking ultimate relaxation, the Sanctuary Spa beckons, offering a haven where you can find solace and serenity amidst the wild beauty that surrounds you.

The Wild Coast Tented Camp is not just a destination; it’s an escape into a world where architecture and nature intertwine. It’s a place where every moment is a journey of discovery, where you are invited to immerse yourself in the exquisite beauty of the Yala bushland and the serenity of the beach. It’s an experience that transcends the ordinary and leaves an indelible mark on your soul.

On your way to your next destination, Mosvold Villa, you will make a stop at Galle Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your chauffeur guide will provide you with a detailed explanation of the fort’s historical and cultural significance. Afterward, you will continue your journey to your beachfront hotel, Mosvold Villa, where you can enjoy a relaxing stay by the sea.

Galle Dutch Fort – UNSECO world heritage site.

The rocky cliffs of Galle, Sri Lanka, witnessed the birth of a magnificent construction over 400 years ago, in 1588. The Portuguese demonstrated foresight and determination by building the Galle Fort, which has since come to symbolize power and perseverance.

However, it was the Dutch in the 17th century who made an indelible mark on this coastal fortification. In 1649, they embarked on a massive project to fortify the structure, using their architectural expertise to transform the fort into a resilient stronghold capable of withstanding the test of time and potential attackers.

This historical, archaeological, and architectural masterpiece has endured for more than 432 years. It appears as though the Sri Lankan Archaeological Department has meticulously cleaned and maintained it to preserve its historical integrity. Their commitment to safeguarding the Galle Fort ensures that it will always reflect its former glory and provide a window into the past.

Walking along the ancient cobblestone pathways and towering walls of Galle Fort feels like a journey back in time, to a place where history still resonates through weathered stones. It’s a site where history isn’t confined to books but is actively lived, offering visitors a glimpse into the enduring character of the country. With its rich history, Galle Fort is an invaluable relic that will stand the test of time; it serves as a symbol of the timeless allure of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage.
