DIVERSITY EXPERIENCE NORTH – Modest Summer Vacation – 08 Days 07 Nights

08 Days / 07 Nights

Quick look

Jaffna was closer to South India than Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. And, prior to the civil war, Jaffna was the second most populous city after Colombo.

However, due to the civil war, Jaffna was closed to visitors and cut off from the rest of the world for nearly 30 years. With its colonial influence and Tamil culture, Jaffna is a fascinating town. If you are more familiar with the culture of the island’s South, you will experience some cultural shock upon visiting Jaffna. When we compare the language, music, food, clothing, vegetation, appearance of the people, and living style of the people, it is completely different from other parts of the country, and when you go there, you feel as if you have landed in another country.

The civil war destroyed or damaged many of Jaffna’s oldest monuments and heritage structures, but when you visit Jaffna, you will be able to see several offthe-beaten-path attractions that are still natural and fresh.

The whole of Jaffna is completely at or below sea level. The Palmyrah tree stands out the most and can be seen just about anywhere. Jaffna experiences a dry season between the months of June and September and a wet season between the months of November and January.

In the past, Jaffna’s population consisted not just Tamils but also Moors (Muslims), Europeans, and Eurasian Burghers. Jaffna’s population boomed in the 20th century, and many Sinhalese migrated north from the south. However, many Moors (Muslims) and Sinhalese left Jaffna because of the civil war.

While the vast majority of Tamils are Shaivite Hindus, local deities may also hold religious significance in some communities. Roman Catholics make up the vast majority of the Christian population, while the Church of South India’s Protestants are a notable but numerically small minority.
