Some of the most important wetlands occur within protected areas managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. These include wetlands in the Mahaweli flood plains, Maduru Oya, Yala East, Ruhuna, Bundala, Horton Plains and Wilpattu, and in the Kalametiya Sanctuary and the Bellanwila- Attidiya Sanctuary.
