Discover the Soul of Anuradhapura: A Timeless Journey through Ruins and Reverence

Step into Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s ancient crown, a UNESCO World Heritage Sacred City that once reigned as the heart of civilization—its roots stretching back to the 5th century BCE, and flourishing as the spiritual and political capital for over 1,300 years.

1. Vessagiriya

Vessagiriya (Vissagiriya) is an ethereal rock-shelter monastery from the mid-3rd century BC that sits among ancient boulders. About 500 monks used to live there quietly under caves with drip-ledged walls. Traces of Brahmi donor inscriptions tell stories of piety carved into stone.

2. Isurumuniya & Its Magnificent Carvings

Isurumuniya, a temple on a hill above a pool, is just a short walk away. Isurumuniya Lovers, the Elephant Pond, and a beautifully carved royal family are just a few of the famous carvings that combine art and legend to draw visitors into stories carved in stone.

3. The Sacred Trio: Devotion Cast in Stone

  • Sri Maha Bodhi: The oldest living tree established by humans, it is at the heart of the spiritual centre. It comes from the original Bodhi tree, where the Buddha attained enlightenment. For thousands of years, its living presence has inspired devotion.
  • Lovamahapaya: The famous Brazen Palace, was once nine stories tall and had a roof made of shiny bronze tiles. It was held up by 1,600 stone pillars arranged in a beautiful way. A piece of it now gives us a taste of how grand it used to be.
  • Ruwanwelisaya: A huge hemispherical stupa constructed in 140 BC by King Dutugemunu, it looms over the complex. It is a timeless sign of respect and stands at an impressive 103 m.

4. Monastic Marvels: Abhayagiri & Jetavana

  • Abhayagiri Vihāra: Once a proud centre of Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana Buddhism, it is now one of the largest monastic institutions in the world. It was previously surrounded by walls and had carved moonstones, beautiful guard stones, peaceful baths, and the tall Abhayagiri Dagaba.
  • Jetavana Monastery: Its huge Jetavanaramaya stupa was some of the highest brick buildings ever created. They were filled with monastic chants and the smell of ancient devotion.

5. Architectural & Spiritual Details

As you walk around the monastery grounds, look for beautiful moonstones—stone arches carved with circular bands that stand for samsara and liberation—and huge guard stones that stand on either side of sacred entrances. The peaceful Samadhi Buddha Statue, which radiates calm compassion, is also at the same threshold.

6. Twin Ponds (Kuttam Pokuna) and Gal Pālāma

Nestled beneath temple ruins, the Twin Ponds—two adjacent rock-hewn bathing pools—combine architectural elegance with functional beauty.
